Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292), İbrahim Ethem Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1895/96, at about 20, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1896/97, to 1904/05, every annual entry places İbrahim Ethem in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Heybeliada.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 250 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Heybeliada, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, nine years of salary come to 16,560 kuruş, 31 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
