Life#
Rauf Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1859/60 (AH 1276) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Rauf also attended the telegraph school.
Rauf began work in Istanbul in 1875/76, at about 16, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1879/80, with Rauf as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Thessaloniki (Selanik). The last posts were in Smolyan (Ahiçelebi) from 1881 to 1883.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to 500 in 1881/82, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Smolyan, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1882/83.
