Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Mustafa Hayrettin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sergeant (çavuş). At about 13, in 1883/84, Mustafa Hayrettin began work in Beirut (Beyrut), paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1883/84, with Mustafa Hayrettin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Safed, where the entries run to 1886/87. Next came Nablus and Jaffa (Yafa) from 1888 to 1895, with a rise to sergeant (Çavuş) in 1888/89, then a return to Nablus from 1895 to 1898. The last posts were in Tripoli (Trablusgarp) from 1904 to 1906, with a rise to Muhabere Memuru.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to 600 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Tripoli, when two in three paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 540 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
