Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1882/83 (AH 1300), Mehmet Tevfik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Mehmet Tevfik also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1904/05, at about 21, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1904/05 and 1905/06, place Mehmet Tevfik in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to a peak of 400 in 1905/06, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Istanbul, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
