Life#
Bekir Adil Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1877/78, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places Bekir Adil in Ioannina (Yanya) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1882/83. Bekir Adil then moved to Diskata from 1883 to 1887, then Pınarhisar from 1888 to 1894. The last posts were in Marmara Ereğlisi from 1894 to 1896.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 500 in 1883/84, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Diskata, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1895/96.
