Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Şükrü Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Şükrü began work in Istanbul in 1893/94, at about 31, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. Few began so late; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 31 or older. Every annual entry from 1897/98 to 1905/06 places Mehmet Şükrü in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
