Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Sami Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1888/89, Mehmet Sami began work in Trabzon, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Mehmet Sami in Damascus (Şam) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Skopje (Üsküp), Yemen, Sivas and Trabzon, four places in six years. The last post was in Yemen again in 1898/99. The farthest post, Yemen, lay about 3,200 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 1,200 in 1898/99, as Muhabere Memuru in Yemen, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
