Life

Born in Istanbul in 1867/68 (AH 1284), İbrahim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İbrahim also wrote French as well as Turkish.

İbrahim began work in Galata in 1902/03, at about 35, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Few began so late; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 35 or older. The first annual entry, for 1903/04, places İbrahim in Galata as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Beyoğlu from 1904 to 1906.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Galata, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 7,200 kuruş, 42 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
