Life#
Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sergeant (çavuş). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 750 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Hüseyin Hüsnü as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in Bitola (Manastır). From 1893 to 1896 the annual entries place Hüseyin Hüsnü in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 750 kuruş a month in 1892/93, as Seyyar Memur in Bitola, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1895/96.
