Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279), Memduh Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an accounts official (muhasebe memuru). Memduh had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 12, in 1874/75, Memduh began work in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Gelibolu, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 12 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Memduh as a registry clerk (Mukayyit) in Drama. For 1877 to 1881 the lists have no entry. Next came Kozan, Alexandroupoli (Dedeağaç) and Edirne from 1881 to 1890. The last posts were in Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1890 to 1898, first in the Emanet Kitabeti, from 1891/92 as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) and from 1892/93 as a chief official (Başmemur).
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 1,000 in 1892/93, as Başmemur in Thessaloniki, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1897/98.
